You thought you were bringing home Lassie from the pound, but some days it feels more like you might have brought home Cujo! The good news is that, with just a bit of basic training, your dog can become better behaved within just a short amount of time. Now that’s news to bark at!
To help you begin training your dog you should understand that having patience is very important. All dogs are different and do not learn at the same pace. Some learn quickly while others at a slower pace. Having patience is a key first step as you set out to train your dog.
If your dog is having little progress with your training, find someone else who is better skilled in training dogs. Some owners give up by thinking their dog is not trainable or their dog is not intelligent, when the real issue is that the owner does not understand how a dog thinks, or how to train a dog effectively.
Use the time that you spend with your dog on a walk as an opportunity to reinforce your training program. Not only is this a perfect time to establish a better relationship with your pet, but it also allows you to work on different exercises together. A walk with your dog can be both enjoyable and an opportunity to learn.
Consider moving your voice up or down in a specific manner associated with individual commands, to help your dog remember them better. Dogs are fantastic at understanding pitch differences, even more than understanding the sounds of the words. So if you alter your voice slightly when you say a certain command, the dog will be more likely to remember what to do.
If you are having problems with dog training, then you should look at your training routine. Dogs are much more susceptible to learning if you have a solid routine. All you have to do is keep repeating the commands you want them to learn repeatedly and eventually they will pick it up. Leaving you with a dog that is much easier to enjoy having.
If you want your dog to stop digging, play with him in the yard. Many dogs who dig do so out of boredom and the desire to get back at their owner. Playing in the yard with your pet offers him the socialization and exercise he needs, and it is also a fun way to bond with your favorite pooch.
Be patient. As you are consistent in your training and the dog learns what you expect, you will gradually see progress. Praise your dog for improvements and try to make training sessions a positive time to enjoy with the dog. As the dog learns that you give rewards and praise for quick obedience, encouraging results should follow.
Housebreaking a dog takes time. Make sure that you take the dog out first thing in the morning and keep taking him out throughout the day. Always take him to the same spot when taking him out to potty. The dog will learn to associate this spot with his business. If an accident happens clean it up and ignore the dog. This will let him know that you are unhappy with him. Do not physically discipline the dog or rub his nose in it, doing so just intimidates the dog and makes accidents more likely to occur.
As mentioned in the beginning of this article, it is very important to get your new dog to understand what should and should not be done inside your house. If you set a routine and be consistent in your training methods, this will lead to a greater understanding from your dog as to what is the proper way to behave.
